Winston Todd

Winston Lincoln Todd, 85 passed away July 27, 2010, at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital, Fredericton, NB, with his children at his side. Winston died of complications from ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). Winston was born in Cambridge-Narrows on July 19, 1925 and lived there until he joined the Army during World War II. After the war he moved to Saint John, NB, and married Elizabeth (Betty) Phillips. He joined the Saint John Fire Department in 1947, retiring as District Chief in 1984. After retirement he and Betty built their retirement home adjacent to the family summer cottage on the beautiful Washademoak Lake. In recent months Winston lived in the Veteran’s Health Unit, Fredericton, NB. Winston was a long serving member of the Saint John, NB Lodge #1 Knights of Pythias and was a Past Chancellor of the Lodge. He was also a Royal Prince of Adilia Temple #157 Dramatic Order of Knights of Korasan Saint John, NB. Winston was a member of the Narrows United Church where he took an active role in the Cemetery Committee. Winston was an avid hunter, a skilled carpenter and woodworker and tireless gardener. In recent years he returned to square dancing with the Washademoak Swingers, an activity he and Betty enjoyed years ago. He was also an active member of the Cambridge-Narrows Seniors.

Winston is survived by son Donald (Robin) of Bedford, NS; daughters Catherine Ann (Jaime) Logue of Oxford Mills, ON and Susan (Arnold) Anderson of Sussex, NB; two sisters Arlene Tessier of Sudbury, ON and Marie Gibbs of Saint John, NB; three brothers Kenneth (Velzora) of Saint John, NB, Thomas (Helga) of Sudbury, ON and Robert (Lynda) of Dowling ON; nine grandchildren Jason Todd, Andrew Logue, Andrew Todd, Scott Logue, Kristen (Charles) Mitchell, Adam Todd, Liam Anderson, Jonathon Anderson and Elizabeth Anderson; one great grandchild Liam Todd; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Winston was predeceased by his first wife Elizabeth (Phillips) Todd and his second wife Stella (Starkey) Todd and three brothers Donald, Colter and Garnett.

The family wishes to thank the staff of the Veteran’s Health Unit, the Chalmers Hospital (3E), relatives and friends who greatly helped Winston and his family through his ALS journey. Remembrances to the Provincial ALS Society or a Charity of Choice.

He is resting at Sherwood’s Funeral Home & Life Tribute Centre (506-839-2156), 18 Scovil Road, Norton, NB, with visiting on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday from 3 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral service will be held from Sherwood’s Chapel at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 31, 2010. Interment will follow in the Narrows United Cemetery.
