Obituary of Catherine McEwen

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mom, Catherine Ann McEwen, age 81, which occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital, NB on Thursday, February 29, 2024. She was born in Saint John, NB, on January 5, 1943, the daughter of the late George and Edith Pearl (Tabor) Alexander.

She was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. The word amazing friend followed very closely to all of those titles. She said often how blessed she was to have everything she had. She said, "Having a family that loves me makes me the richest woman." She always went above and beyond. She always had a shoulder and an ear for anyone, not to mention the fire under her belt to boot. She always had someone in her thoughts every day, thinking and wondering how everybody was.

She was a "Staple" to the community. She fed most of the Salt Springs kids at one time or another. She always had homemade cookies, cakes, or her famous homemade bread and homemade Donuts. She was a hard worker, always had clothes on the line and she was an avid outdoors person who loved to garden whether it be vegetables or flowers. And she worked hard just because she was such a big-hearted woman. If you said "Cathy, I need to talk" she was there. She'd pour a cup of coffee and she'd pull up a chair. When she opened the door to her house, she opened the door to her heart. She never stayed "Cathy" for long, but always turned to Mom or Grammy after the first visit. She was everything to everybody and always put herself last; Because she didn't want anyone to worry about her.

Always remembered…..Always loved…..Always alive in those who loved her…..And those that she loved.

She is survived by sons Phillip McEwen (Carmen Williams) of Salt Springs, NB, Robert McEwen (Evelyn Arsenault) of Urbainville, PEI, Larry McEwen (Heather Cummings) of Salt Springs, NB, and Keven McEwen (Sharon Dunlop) of Smithtown; daughters Sherry Israel (Carl Israel) of Salt Springs, NB, Patricia McEwen-Suter (Wade McEwen-Suter) of Norton, NB, Sandra Coggan (Edward Coggan) of Kingston, NB, Jacqueline Raven (Donald Raven) of Keirsteadville, NB and Linda McEwen (Bobby Rector) of Sussex, NB; grandchildren Michael, Katie, Amanda, Matthew, Sarah, Stephanie, Carla, Angela, Bradley, Kristina, Andrea, Stacy, Jennifer, Aaron, Brandon, Makayla, Ryan, and Mackenzie; 11 great-grandchildren; brother George Alexander (Pat Flynn); as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband Howard McEwen, brothers Jim Alexander and Arthur Alexander, and granddaughter Melissa Israel.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Sherwood’s Funeral Home and Life Tribute Centre (506-839-2156), Norton, NB where the visitation will be held on Monday, March 4, 2024 from 3:00 to 7:00pm. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 5, 2024 at 11:00am at the Sherwood’s Chapel. Interment will take place in Riverbank Cemetery in the spring.
